What Does "Natural" Really Mean In Skincare?
What Does Natural Really Mean In Skincare? It may not mean as much as you think!
The word natural gets thrown around a lot in skincare—but what does it actually mean? If you're someone who cares about what goes on your skin (and into your body), you deserve the truth behind the label.
The Truth: “Natural” Isn’t Regulated
Here’s something many people don’t realize.
The FDA does not regulate the term “natural” in skincare. That means any brand can label a product as natural, even if it contains synthetic chemicals, harsh preservatives, or heavily processed ingredients. In other words, “natural” doesn’t always mean what you think it does. This is why it's so important to know what to look for on your ingredients label.
Not All “Naturals” Are Created Equal
Because the term isn’t standardized, each skincare company creates its own definition. Here’s how it typically breaks down:
• Truly Natural: Ingredients that occur in nature and are minimally processed—like plant oils, clays, or raw butters.
• Naturally-Derived: These start as natural ingredients but are processed with chemicals to alter their structure.
• Buzzword Natural: AKA "greenwashing". A marketing tactic where “natural” is slapped on a label without regard for the ingredients inside.
At Brody Brielle Skincare, we believe in full transparency. When we use the word natural, we mean it in the truest sense—ingredients that come from the earth and are handled with care.
Why Preservatives Matter
Another thing to keep in mind: any skincare product that contains water (like creams, lotions, and cleansers) must have a preservative to prevent harmful bacteria, fungi, or mold from growing.
While some brands claim to be “100% natural” and “preservative-free,” that’s only safe if the product is anhydrous (oil-based or completely water-free). Otherwise, skipping preservatives can put your skin—AND health—at risk.
And here’s the honest truth: most effective preservatives are not naturally occurring. But they are safe, thoroughly tested, and necessary for product stability.
Natural Doesn’t Always Mean Safer
Just because an ingredient is natural doesn’t automatically make it good for your skin—poison ivy is natural, after all! And many synthetic ingredients are safe, non-toxic, and clinically backed. What matters most is how ingredients are chosen, combined, and used.
Our Philosophy at Brody Brielle Skincare
We’re a brand built on hydration without irritation. That means we’re picky about what we include—and just as thoughtful about what we leave out.
• Less synthetic ingredients
• Pthalate-free fragrances
• No gimmicky “natural” claims without real meaning
Instead, we use gentle, effective ingredients—some natural, some naturally-derived, all carefully selected to support very dry, reactive, or sensitive skin. Because your skin deserves honesty, hydration, and peace of mind.
